Auditory-Verbal Center
of Atlanta
Misson:
AVCA, a not-for-profit organization, is a hearing center serving adults, children, infants, and their families. The center provides (re)habilitation, education, and counseling programs for all segments of the community. AVCA assists individuals with impaired hearing to optimally develop auditory-verbal communication skills. The development of these skills allows them to be an intergral part of our hearing society. It is one of seven such centers in the U.S. and the only one of it's kind in Georgia.
Philosophy and Nature:
Formaly AEC (Auditory Education Center), AVCA was founded in 1977. the center specializes in foloowing th Auditory-Verbal Approach in its work with children who are deaf or hard of hearing. The goal is for these children to grow up in typicla learning and living environments and become independent, integral, and active citizens in mainstream society.
AVCA's children develop the ability to listen and to use verbal communication within their own family and community constellations. They attend regular schools starting with preschool and need no special education assistance.
Auditory-Verbal Principles:
Early detection of a child's hearing loss, ideally in the newborn nursery.
Early use of modern technology (hearing aids and/or cochlear implant), crucial tools that enable a child to experience sound.
Individualized auditory-verbal therapy, teaching parents how to make sound meaningful to their child every day, all day long.
The child learns to respond and use sound in the same way and in the same manner those with typical hearing learn, by using sound.
Auditory-Verbal Children:
Do listen and speak.
Do use the telephone.
Do not need special education classes.
Kiwanis Involvement:
Avca is a Young Children Priority One project for the Georgia District Kiwanis.
A team of four from your club will give you interclub credit.
